Words used in place of Noun are called Pronoun.

Example:- Preeti found a dog. She picked it up and gave it to Ram. He gave it to the police.
Here, She is used in place of Preeti, it is used in place of dog and He is used in place for Ram. Therefore She, it, and He are pronouns.

Types of Pronoun

(A) Personal Pronoun

 The pronouns that make sense of the person in the sentence are called Personal
pronoun.
Example:-
    He is a boy.
    They are children.
    You are a girl.

Some Rules for Personal Pronoun:-

(1) If the pronouns of different Persons are used with the same Verb in a sentence, then the order of writing them is as follows:
  • Firstly Second Person(You) then Third Person(He) and then First Person(I). It's like 2+3+1(Second Person+Third Person+First Person+Pronoun).
    Example:- 
        He and I are good friends.
        You, he, and I are work partners.
  • In Plural, this sequence is 1+2+3(First Person+Second Person+Third Person).
    Example:-
        We and you can live together.
        We, you, and they can do it.
  • If the sense of the sentence is not positive(like a mistake, crime) then the order of pronoun is 1+2+3(First Person+Second Person+Third Person).
    Example:-
        You and he spoiled the party.
        I and you are responsible for the loss.

(2) If the pronouns of more than Persons are used in a sentence and a Plural Pronoun is used for them then:
  • With Third Person and First Person, First Person Plural Pronoun is used.
  • With Second Person and Third Person, Second Person Plural Pronoun is used.
  • With Second Person and First Person, First Person Plural Pronoun is used.
  • With all three Persons, First Person Plural Pronoun is used.
    Example:-
        You and I have done our job.
        You and he have completed your job.

(3) Singular Pronoun is used with 'Each', 'Either', 'Neither', 'or', 'nor', 'Either......or', 'Neither.....nor'.
    Example:-
        Neither of them gets his turn.
        Ram or Shyam should deposit his dues.

Use of Pronoun 'It'

(1) For non-living things
Example:-
    Here is your table. Please take it.
(2) For Animals
Example:-
    I have a dog. It is very cute.
(3) For young child
Example:-
    When I saw the baby, it was smiling.
(4) To give importance to a noun or pronoun
Example:-
    It was I, who slapped you.
(5) For time and weather
Example:-
    It is summer.

(B) Reflexive Pronoun

Reflexive Pronoun is formed when we add 'self' to my, your, her, him, it and 'selves' to our, your, them.
Example:-
    You hurt yourself.
    She made herself.

The reflexive noun should not be used at follows:
  • Myself Ashita Rathi.
  • Herself will do it.
  • Myself will go there.

(C) Emphatic Pronoun

The emphatic pronoun is similar to the reflexive pronoun. An emphatic pronoun is used to give importance to Noun/Pronoun.
Example:-
    He himself found the solution.

These pronouns are used just after the Subject.

(D) Reciprocal Pronoun

These pronouns are made by putting together two pronouns and they represent a mutual relationship.
Example:-
    They slapped each other.
    They gave gifts to one another.

(E) Demonstrative Pronoun 

This, that, these are demonstrative pronouns. The verb is used just after them.
It is used to point out the object to which it refers.
Example:-
    This is the Taj Mahal.
    That is my house.

(F) Indefinite Pronoun

Indefinite Pronoun does not indicate a fixed person or thing - Some, Someone, All, A few, Others, No one, Nobody, Anyone, etc.
Example:-
    Do good to others.
    Some people were injured.
    All went to Delhi.

(G) Interrogative Pronoun

Interrogative Pronouns are used to make questions. What, Whom, Whose, Which, What are Interrogative Pronouns.
Example:-
    Who are you?
    What is this?
    What is your name?

What is used for general things and works.
    Example:-
        What is this?
        What is your name?

Who, Whose and Whom are used for people.
    Example:-
        Who is Suresh?
        Whose dog is this?
        Whom did you see today?

Which is used in the selection or choice of people and things.
    Example:-
        Which is your pen?
        Which dog do you like the most?

(H) Distributive Pronoun

These pronouns are used to indicate one person or thing(one at a time) and they are singular so singular verbs are used with them. Each, Everyone, Either, Neither are Distributive Pronouns.
Example:-
    Each of you got your turn.
    Either of the two will win.

Everyone is always used to indicate more than two person or things while Each is used to indicate two and more than two. Everyone is never used for two.

Either and Neither are generally used for two person or things. For more than two, Any, No one, None are used.

(9) Exclamatory Pronoun

A pronoun as an exclamation is called an Exclamatory Pronoun.
Example:-
    What! You lost the game?

  • Let you and me go to play.
  • You and I are strangers.
  • One should obey elders.
  • It is easy to get her agree.
  • The cow has hurt its legs.
  • Who was the girl that came to meet you?
  • My house is bigger than theirs.
  • What place are you going to?
  • She must do her duties.
  • Two friends love each other.
  • You yourself did this work.
  • Whom do you want?
  • This is my pen.
  • Either of these roads leads to the hospital.
  • I was not as rich as he.
  • Let me take leave of you.
