Diwali

Diwali or Deepawali is a Hindu festival and it is celebrated for five days. The houses are decorated with rows of lights, rangolis, diyas, candles, flowers, etc. to invite the presence of Goddess Lakshmi, Goddess of wealth and purity. Diwali celebrates the return of Ram, Sita, Lakshman and Hanuman to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile.

The five days of Diwali include :

  1.  Dhanteras - It aims at increasing prosperity and wealth. Dhanteras is considered as an auspicious day to buy gold, silver, or precious utensils. A new broomstick is used to clean the house properly as an act of getting rid of all the problems like poverty and diseases. Garbage and waste are considered a center of negative energy so houses are cleaned properly before Diwali.
  2. Chaturdashi - It is also known as Roop Chaturdashi or Narak Chaturdashi. On this day, Demon Narkasur was killed by Lord Krishna. On this day, people wake up early in the morning and take a good bath. It is considered as a day to clean ourselves, it means to get rid of all the bad thoughts and fill our hearts with positive energy.
  3. Lakshmi Pooja - The most important day among the five days of the Diwali festival is Lakshmi Pooja. On this day, Goddess Lakshmi is worshipped along with Lord Ganesha and Goddess Saraswati. People light diyas, candles, and lights in their homes and streets and blow thousands of sparkles and crackers.
  4. Govardhan Pooja - It is also known as Annakot. This day is celebrated because Lord Krishna defeated Indra and told people to worship nature. People make a small mound using cow dung symbolizing Govardhan Parwat and worship it.
  5. Bhai Dooj - On this day, brothers visit their sisters and get together to share love and food wishing for a long, happy, healthy life and great success for them and honor the bond between them.
