Networking Fundamentals

computer network is a group of computers and peripheral devices connected through data communication channels that allow sharing of resources and information. Internet is an example of computer network.

Network Devices

A network device is attached to the computer to connect through various layers.

1. Switch: A switch is a device which connects multiple communication lines together. It is used to create temporary connections between two or more devices linked to switch. A switch is a hardware device that filters and forwards network packets.

2. Hub: A hub is a central device in a network that provides common connections among the computers or nodes. It connects multiple wires coming from different branches. It cannot filter data so data packets are sent to all connected devices

3. Bridge: A bridge is a networking device responsible for filtering data. It checks the destination address of a packet of data and decides whether it should be forwarded or dropped. It operates at data link layer.

4. Router: A router is attached to one or more networks to forward packets of data from one network to another.

5. Repeater: A repeater is a device which connects two segments of a LAN.
